Ice skating accessories as an ice skating gift

There are many items that figure skaters use that would be a wonderful gift when considering what to but for an ice skater. The following ice skating gifts are only known an ice skater, so the inside knowledge will stand you in good stead.

A note pad – to write down coaches notes

Figure skaters are very often seen leaning on the barrier writing down the last set of moves in the choreography just shown them by their coach, or writing down the last training drill they have been asked to practice before the next lesson. Many coaches ask their students to come to the lesson with a note pad and pen for that very reason.

Micro fiber cleaning cloths as an ice skating gift

Whenever a skater comes off the ice, they will need to dry their blades. This prevents rusting of the blades and are used every time I skate and by most other people I know.

Meguiar’s X2020 Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels, Pack of 3 (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

These Meguiars X2020 microfibre towels will help dry skates quickly and preserve the blades for years to come, check them out at Amazon here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Hand warmers – the perfect gift for those cold winter mornings at the ice rink

HeatMax Hot Hands 2 Handwarmer (40 Pairs) (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

These are amazing. I swear by them in the winter months. Tear the packet open, give them a shake and off they go. They get lovely and warm and will stay that way for eight hours, so no matter how long you ice skate for, they will keep your hands warm.

I slide them inside the palm of my glove. At first I close my hand and make a fist, that way your finger tips are in contact with the heat pad as well, so they warm up. After skating for a while, I find that even with your hands open, the heat radiates down enough to keep your fingers warm.

If its really, really cold, I suggest wearing mittens, that way, when you put the hand warmer inside the glove, they drop right down to the bottom where your fingers are. That way, you are guaranteed to have toasty fingers for all of your ice skating session.

All in all, these hand warmers are a great idea when considering what to buy for an ices skater. I have featured the larger pack of 40 pairs here as they represent the best value for money. They are available in smaller packs, and are relatively low cost compared with what you get for your money. Click here to check them out on Amazon. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Water bottle

Pogo BPA-Free Plastic Water Bottle, 18oz. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

A water bottle may seem like a simple idea, but it is an essential piece of kit for any athlete and that includes figure skaters. This 18oz Pogo water bottle is ideal for the purpose. It has a leak proof cover and a chug style lid for fast drinking, which is important when you only get a moment for a drink whilst receiving coaching.

This is only one of the colors, it comes in eight different color options, is BPA-free and is surprisingly low cost, click here to check it out. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Soakers as an ice skating gift

Soakers are indispensable, I have had the same pair for years, I use them every day.

My ice skating soakers that I use every day

They really are great. People from my rink use all different variations, from the modest, to the outrageous. I have picked two below, complete with the links to get them. One is a little wacky (these are very popular though) and one that is more toned down.

Jerry’s Ice Skating Soakers – Penguin (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Ice skate blade soakers are a great gift. Blades need to be kept dry and warm to prevent them from rusting. When ice skates have been worn for skating, they get cold. When you leave the ice after training, they are wet, but even after drying, the cold steel makes the attract condensation. This can be prevented by using ice skate blade soakers. These come in many varieties, from plain black simple ones, to fun ones like above. Many skaters opt for the fun ones. These Jerry,s Penguin ices skating soakers are great fun. Check them out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

For something a little more sedate. Try these soakers from A&R Sports.

A&R Sports Blade Cover (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

If you are unsure of the exact tastes of the figure skater you are buying for =, then sometimes its best to keep it simple. A&R Sports sell these soakers in over 30 colors, including some patterned ones. I have chosen the black here for simplicity, but you can choose from loads of colors. They are simple, attractive and you won’t believe the price. Check them out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Blade guards as an ice skating gift

Guardogs Blade Guards

Guardog Blue Cotton Candyz scented ice skate blade guards (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Ice skate guards make an excellent ice skating gift. The last thing you want after getting your blades sharpened is to step on a bit of gravel whilst walking around the rink and wreck your blades. Even just walking around on the rubber flooring of the rink will dull your blades. Ices skate guards will prevent this.

Guardog blade guards come in a range of colors. The ones featured above are scented with the scent of cotton candy, so they will make your skate bag smell nice too. They are relatively low in cost and can be cut to any length, so you dont need to know the size of the skates or blades they are going on. Check them out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

They are also available in solid colors without a scent.

Guardog Mint Green (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Guardog also make a Gelz range, including a clear gel guard (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned). also Guardog are now making color changing blade guards. Using color change technology, Guardog Cameleonz will change from one solid color to another dependent on temperature.

Chameleonz – Temperature sensitive Blade Guards (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Penguin Rockerz

The gold standard for blade guards are Penguin Rockers. They arn’t cheap, but quite simply, they are the best.

These are my Penguin Rockerz. I think they are wonderful, so easy to use and walk in.

My Penguin Rockerz

As you can see, they are very high quality. They are really solid and they fit like a glove. That is one of the individual properties of Penguin Rockerz, they are made individually for your particular blade.

That can also be a down side in terms of giving them as a gift. You need access to the persons ice skates who you are buying them for. Penguin Rockerz are made according to the particular blade brand, model and size. That is why they fit so well and feel lovely on.

They are easy to walk in because they have a rocker shape, they are wider than must blade guards, so are more stable and they have grips on. All of these mean that they are a dream to walk in.

The V slot where the blade goes in accommodates for even the most exclusive blades, like Matrix, Paramount and Revolution.

Mix and match colors on my blade guards

Another amazing factor in choosing Penguin Rockerz is that you can mix and match colors in what seems like endless combinations, even different on each foot.

If you would like to order these as a gift for someone you need the following details off their blades:

  • The blade manufacturer, look for names like John Wilson, MK or Paramount etc.
  • Blade type, look for model descriptions like coronation, pattern 99, revolution, gold star, phantom, dance etc.
  • The blade size, more often than not, this is stamped into the base of the blade. It is normally in inches, so look for 9″, 91/4″ or 11″ etc.

Penguin Rockerz are only available in certain countries. To found out where your nearest dealer is check out the Rockerz website.

Clothing as an ice skating gift

Bottoms/trousers/pants/leggings

Mens ice skating trousers/pants

ChloeNoel Figure Skating 2″ Elastic Waist Men’s Pants M01 (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

These are amazing ice skating trousers, they are super flexible and so well made. They are smart enough to wear in competition as well. Here is a photo of my ice dance partner and in an international figure skating competition. I am wearing the Chloe Noel figure skating pants shown above.

They are made from 49% Polyester – 38% Nylon – 13% spandex, that makes them very flexible. They are very comfortable and hard wearing. Note that they come with the legs unfinished. By that I mean, they are not hemmed. There is a very good reason for that, because we all have different length legs, and like the trousers to hang just right over the the figure skates.

This way, when ordering, all you have to do is get the waist right and you can alter the leg length to whatever you want.

T turn the leg up, you just need to bond it with some adhesive hemming tape. I was preparing for a competition, so I wanted to make sure the hem was not going to come down, so I used Wundaweb Extra Strong Hemming Tape (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned), as shown below.

Wundaweb Extra Strong Hemming Tape (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

It is simple to use, just turn up the leg to the required lenth, put the Wundaweb in and iron it on using a cloth to cover the fabric, maybe a damp cloth (check the instructions). If you are buying the Chloe Noel skating trousers/pants as a gift, I would consider adding Wundaweb Extra Strong Hemming Tape to it so they can be turned up easily. It is low in cost and great at what it does, check it out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Women’s ice skating bottoms – as an ice skating gift

Chloe Noel Figure Skating All Black 3″ Waist Band Skate Pants P22 (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

These women’s figure skating pants by Chloe Noel are warm and flexible. As with most of the Chloe Noel range, they are made for figure skating, so the leg hem will stretch over the figure skating boot perfectly. If you are thinking what to buy for an ice skater who is female, you could do a great deal worse than professional figure skating bottoms. These Chloe Noel figure skating bottoms are a performance piece of clothing and are available in adult’s and children’s sizes. Check them out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Gloves for ice skaters

Mittens – the ice skating gift for when it gets really cold

Mittens for women

When winter temperatures plummet and your local rink refuse to turn the heat up, it can get really cold. When it does get that cold, nothing is warmer on your hands than mittens. OK, so you have less dexterity in mittens, but when it gets really cold, you learn to live with that. Unlike gloves, they keep your fingers together, which keeps them warmer. The other benefit of mittens is that you can slide heat packs into them and the packs slide right down to your fingers. For extra warmth, you can opt for a mitten with thinsulate lining, like the one below.

Bruceriver Women Snowflake Knit Mittens with Warm Thinsulate Fleece Lining (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

These Bruceriver knitted mittens for women have a thinsulate lining, so will keep your hands warm in cold conditions. The are available in several colors, check them out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Mittens for men

These are the men’s version of the knitted thinsulate mitten. As with the women’s, they are available in several colors and are very reasonable price. Check them out here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Women’s technical tops as an ice skating gift – for colder rinks

Some rinks are heated pretty well, some rinks however are really cold, but at the same time, as soon as you start exercise vigorously, you need something that is breathable. Enter the technical fabric. If you are buying an ice skating gift for someone at a cold rink (some rinks are well heated, but not many) then you could entertain a technical jacket, they are great and make a lovely gift.

Nike Women’s Pro Hyperwarm Training Top (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

This women’s Nike Womens Pro Hyperwarm Training Top will keep you warm but they are breathable when you start to sweat. I have the male version of the Nike Hyperwarm top and it is great in winter. With 19% Spandex, they are flexible and the fleece lined hyper warm element combined with a figure hugging fit make a great technical sport top. Check it out on Amazon here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Men’s technical tops as an ice skating gift for colder rinks

Nike Men’s Hyperwarm LS Fitted Training Top (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

I have one one of these. It is excellent. I have had it for years. Its bulletproof, wash after wash, its still pretty much the same as I bought it. I wear it under a T shirt and a technical mid layer when training in the winter. As I get warmer, I start peeling off the layers, normally ending up with just this top and a T shirt. They are warm, breathable and wick away the sweat, oh and did I mention that they are very flexible. I would recommend this over and over again. They aren’t the cheapest on the market, but they may be one of the best, check them out on Amazon here. (Link to Amazon – Commissions earned)

Lessons as ice skating gifts

A one on one lesson as an ice skating gift

A one on one coaching lesson

When it comes to the gift that keeps giving, one on one coaching is top of the list. If you are thinking what to buy for a figure skater, then a one on one coaching session is a great idea. If you know someone who is learning to skate and trying to figure it out (if you excuse the pun) all on their own, a coach can really help.

You can learn more in 15 minutes with a coach than you can figure out for yourself in weeks. If you want to get a one to one coaching session for someone, you will need to ring your rink and have a chat. They will be able to put you in contact with an ice skating coach. They may also suggest group lessons or a course of group lessons. See below.

Group lessons or a course of lessons as an ice skating gift

Group lessons

Most ice rinks run group lessons, usually in line with the national curriculum of the ice skating governing body for the country in question. Group lessons are often more affordable than one on one lessons and are the way that most ice skaters begin.

In many cases group lessons are bookable in a block of four five or six weeks. This usually involves attending an approximately half hour lesson once a week and in many cases, you are allowed to stay on the ice after the lesson, to practice what you have been taught. As you often get ice time in with the group lesson, this can be a very economical way to learn to skate. Though it is worth checking when purchasing at the rink, what you get for your money.

When skaters have progressed through the group lesson system, they will often seek a coach to begin one on one lessons with. Many people start with group lessons, including me and then progress on through their ice skating career. A block of group lessons make a wonderful ice skating gift.
